Dental Crowns
in Oklahoma City, OK
A cracked, worn, or heavily decayed tooth rarely heals on its own, and waiting often turns a repairable problem into a bigger one. A dental crown covers the damaged tooth and restores its strength, shape, and appearance so you can chew and smile comfortably again.
Full Coverage
Protection for
Your Tooth
At Oklahoma Smiles General Dentistry, Dr. James Hulsey places custom ceramic crowns that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gum line up. Ceramic is tooth-colored, so the crown blends in with your surrounding teeth. As part of our restorative dentistry services, we recommend a crown when it is the best option for your tooth.
What Does a Dental Crown Do?
A crown works like a protective shell. It holds a weakened tooth together, restores its shape and size, and shields it from further damage. Crowns also cap teeth after root canal treatment, anchor dental bridges, and sit on top of dental implants, which makes them one of the most versatile restorations in dentistry.
Not every tooth holds a crown equally well. According to a 2022 study in the European Journal of Oral Sciences, crowns placed on root canal-treated teeth, and on patients who grind their teeth, failed more often across 1,037 single crowns. That is why we check your bite and the condition of the tooth before recommending a crown.
Your Dental Crown Process
Exam and Preparation
Dr. Hulsey starts with an exam and digital x-rays to confirm that a crown is the right treatment. He then removes a small amount of enamel so the crown fits naturally, takes an impression, and sends it to a dental lab. A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is made.
Crown Fabrication
A dental lab makes your custom ceramic crown to match the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth, working from the impression taken at your first visit. Dr. Hulsey checks the crown for fit, function, and appearance before placement.
Crown Placement
At your second appointment, we remove the temporary crown and bond your permanent ceramic crown in place. Dr. Hulsey checks your bite and makes final adjustments so the crown feels comfortable, then reviews aftercare so you know what to expect while the area heals.
When a Crown
Is Better Than
a Filling
A filling works when the damage is limited and enough healthy tooth remains. A crown becomes the better choice when decay or a crack is extensive, when the tooth is at risk of breaking, or when a filling would leave too little structure to support the tooth.
Dr. Hulsey recommends a crown only when a filling is not enough, and he explains his reasoning during your exam so you can see why. If a filling can do the job well, that is the option we suggest.
Signs You May Need a Dental Crown
Some signs point to a tooth that needs more than a filling. Watch for these common concerns.
- Cracked or broken tooth: A fracture can spread, so a crown holds the tooth together before the damage worsens.
- Large cavity: When decay has removed too much structure for a filling, a crown rebuilds what is left.
- Root canal treatment: A treated tooth can become more brittle, so a crown helps protect it.
- Worn or misshapen tooth: When whitening or porcelain veneers cannot correct the problem, a crown may restore the tooth’s shape.
- Pain when biting: This can signal a cracked or weakened tooth that needs an exam.
If you notice any of these signs, schedule an exam so we can check the tooth and explain your options.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns
How long do dental crowns last?
Crown lifespan varies from patient to patient. Daily brushing and flossing, regular exams, and avoiding habits like chewing ice or grinding your teeth may help your crown last many years. We review care tips with you when your crown is placed.
Is getting a dental crown painful?
We use local anesthesia during crown preparation and placement, so the area is numb during the procedure. Some patients notice mild sensitivity or soreness for a few days afterward, which usually eases quickly.
How many appointments does a dental crown take?
Most crowns take two appointments. At the first, we prepare the tooth, take an impression, and place a temporary crown. At the second, we bond your permanent crown and check your bite.
How much does a dental crown cost?
Cost depends on the tooth, the condition of the surrounding structure, and your insurance coverage, so we confirm pricing after your exam. We accept HSA and FSA payments and can discuss financing through CareCredit and Cherry.
Does insurance cover dental crowns?
Many dental plans cover part of the cost when a crown is needed to restore a damaged tooth, though coverage depends on your plan. We accept Delta Dental, Health Choice, and Cigna, and our team helps you review your insurance benefits before treatment.
Can a crown be placed on a tooth that has had a root canal?
Yes. A tooth treated with a root canal can become more brittle, so a crown is often placed to protect it. We check the tooth and your bite first to confirm a crown is the right fit.
