The best dental care is the care that prevents problems before they start. At Oklahoma Smiles, preventive dentistry is the foundation of everything we do.

WHY PREVENTIVE CARE MATTERS

Protect Your
Smile Before
Problems Start

Preventive dentistry is about more than keeping your teeth clean. It’s about catching issues early, maintaining the health of your gums and bone structure, and identifying problems, like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, before they become serious and costly to treat.

At Oklahoma Smiles General Dentistry, Dr. James Hulsey takes a thorough, education-forward approach to every preventive visit. He doesn’t just clean your teeth and send you on your way. He takes time to explain what he’s seeing, what it means for your long-term health, and what you can do at home to protect your smile between visits.

Research consistently links oral health to overall systemic health. Gum disease, for example, has been associated with heart disease, diabetes, and other serious conditions. Regular preventive care at Oklahoma Smiles is one of the most important investments you can make in your whole-body health — not just your smile.

What to Expect
at Your Preventive
Visit

Every preventive visit at Oklahoma Smiles includes a professional teeth cleaning, comprehensive oral exam, and a review of your home care routine. Dr. Hulsey evaluates the health of your teeth, gums, and supporting bone structure to identify any areas of concern early.

We also perform digital X-rays as needed to detect issues that aren’t visible to the naked eye, such as cavities between teeth, bone loss, or changes below the gum line. Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produce clear, high-resolution images that allow Dr. Hulsey to make more accurate assessments.

Every visit also includes an oral cancer screening. Early detection is critical for positive outcomes, and Dr. Hulsey screens for signs of oral cancer at every appointment as part of his commitment to comprehensive, whole-patient care.

THE STEPS OF YOUR VISIT

Your Preventive Visit at Oklahoma Smiles

Step 1: Professional Cleaning

Our hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from all surfaces of your teeth, including areas that regular brushing and flossing can’t reach. We’ll also polish your teeth and review your home care routine to make sure you have the tools and techniques to maintain your results between visits.

Step 2: Comprehensive Exam

Dr. Hulsey will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and bite. He checks for signs of cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and other concerns. Digital X-rays are taken as needed to get a complete picture of what’s happening below the surface. Dr. Hulsey will walk you through his findings and explain what they mean for your care.

Step 3: Oral Cancer Screening & Home Care Review

Every visit concludes with an oral cancer screening and a personalized home care review. Dr. Hulsey will share any specific recommendations for your brushing and flossing routine, and discuss the right schedule for your next visit based on your individual oral health needs.

FAQS

How often should I come in for a cleaning and exam?

Most patients benefit from preventive visits every six months. However, Dr. Hulsey may recommend more frequent visits depending on your oral health history, gum health, or other risk factors. He will discuss the right schedule for you at your appointment and explain his reasoning so you always understand your care plan.

What happens if a problem is found during my preventive visit?

If Dr. Hulsey identifies a concern during your exam, he will explain what he found, what it means, and what your options are. There is never any pressure to proceed with treatment the same day. Dr. Hulsey believes in giving patients the information they need to make confident, informed decisions about their care at their own pace.
